2009 Junior Jug

REPORT FOR THE JUNIOR JUG TOURNAMENT

GOONDIWINDI GOLF CLUB - JUNE 29 – JULY 1,  2009

The Brisbane & District Junior Jug Team consisting of Ashleigh Blacksell, Andrea Galvin and Katie Sparks, proved to be a very successful team choice.  We made a slow start on the Monday June 29 AM and PM rounds, however, we were outclassed, in one of  the first round matches, by a huge talent namely, a young lass from Far North Queensland, Gennai Goodwin, who plays on a handicap of 4.
We will see Gennai pop up in the ensuing years, as she is still only 14 years of age and has the physique and talent of a very successful up and coming young golfer.

We saw some really great golf during the course of the tournament and our girls played extremely well.  We had superb support from our caddies in Phyllis and Ken Fourte, who caddied in all of the ten matches.  I have given Phyllis and Ken the title of being the best caddies in the whole of Australia!

We were still in sixth position at the end of the second day of matches, however, on the third and final morning of matches, our girls played the games of their lives and won both their matches, so bringing us up to second place.  Admittedly we tied with two other Districts, however, we still finished in second place!

We think that there is an advantage in selecting players who have had the experience of having been in the Junior Jug Competition  previously, however, it is always an incentive for the girls to practice hard and try to achieve the accolade of acquiring the status of being in any of the Districts’ Junior Jug Teams. An item they can include in their Curricula Vitae.

For the record the Junior Jug was won this year by the Downs and South West District, very worthy winners. Congratulations to Downs and South West. It was a shame that Central Queensland District, pulled out of the Tournament.  The Junior Jug Tournament will be played in Mosman next year, so girls, practice hard and we are looking forward to selecting a super team next year.

Our thanks to the Ladies of Goondiwindi Golf Club, who were excellent hosts for the Tournament, the Ground Staff and House Staff were all fantastic and we enjoyed the trip immensely.

Estelle Bush, Captain of the Team 2009.
